EMINENT DOMAIN THREATENS ATWATER VILLAGE PROPERTY ALONG RAILROAD CORRIDOR

The California High Speed Rail Authority (HSRA) is quietly developing plans that could require the seizure of numerous private properties in Atwater Village that abut the railroad corridor thru eminent domain. The HSRA seeks to add 10feet to the existing right-of-way along Atwater’s railroad corridor between the 2-freeway and the 134-freeway for constructing a high-speed rail system.

HSRA’s proposed high-speed rail system would take travelers from Los Angeles to San Francisco within 2½ hours. The high-speed electric-powered trains on a 700-mile rail system, which includes Atwater’s 4-mile section, would travel up to 220 mph.

Properties in danger of being seized includes all properties that abut the railroad corridor along Casitas Avenue, Store-it-All between Glendale and Los Feliz Blvd’s, Costco on Los Feliz Blvd, and other commercial properties along Alger Street.

Properties in Glassell Park and the City of Glendale may also be seized and demolished by HSRA. Properties included the historic Valley Knudsen Dairy building on Fletcher Drive and all residential homes on Gardena Ave.

HSRA scheduled public meetings in October 2009 to discuss the proposed plans but were then cancelled without explanation. New meeting dates are expected to be announced “soon” according to HSRA.
