Thank You Atwater Village!

Friends of Atwater Village would like to give our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make our 2012 Spring Cleanup a success.

Special thanks go to Atwater Village residents Marie Conte, Cynthia Veneuad and Max Rios and to Northland Church members Jamie Olsen and Rene Chun who all worked hard pulling weeds, picking up trash, cleaning tree wells and clearing storm drain covers to make our Village shine.

Another special thanks goes to Luis Lopez Automotive for hosting our cleanup and donating the water used by the MTA for cleaning the sidewalks and bus stops along Fletcher Dr.

Additional thanks go the MTA Metro Team and their workers who trimmed and cleaned up the Bougainvillea at the Glendale Blvd underpass and filled many trash bags of debris along Glendale Blvd.  Also, we'd like to thank the Students and Staff Member from Boys Republic for weeding the sidewalks of the entire Hyperion Bridge.

Lastly, thanks to Atwater Grill for providing lunch for the volunteers as a thank you for weeding the planters in front of their business. The lunch was delicious and it was a nice to have participation and acknowledgement of appreciation from a merchant.

Thank you again for helping make our Village sparkle n’ shine.

“ATWATER VILLAGE” PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY BOOK FOR SALE IN AUGUST!

Atwater Village celebrated its centennial in 2010. To help commemorate this important milestone Friends of Atwater Village (FAV) produced Atwater’s first photographic history book, as part of Arcadia Publishing for the Images of America series. In the shadow of Griffith Park along the Glendale Narrows section of the Los Angeles River sits Atwater Village, a charming slice of Los Angeles nestled amid Silver Lake, Los Feliz, and the city of Glendale. Atwater's beginnings date to 1868 when W. C. B. Richardson bought the 671-acre Santa Eulalia Rancho. Starting in 1904, the Pacific Electric Red Car offered a convenient commute to downtown Los Angeles, and the Art Tile Company (later Gladding McBean) and Van de Kamps Bakery became key local employers. Stylish homes and bungalows proliferated along the tree-lined streets, built in the Mediterranean, English Tudor, Spanish Colonial Revival, California Craftsman, and Fantasy architectural styles. A library, post office, schools, and churches sprang up along with more than 100 family-owned and corporate enterprises. Nearly 4 miles long and half a mile wide, Atwater evolved as a wholly contained community, prompting residents in 1987 to successfully petition the city to officially add the word Village to its name.

ATWATER’S “LA GRAN LIMPIEZA” AND THE MAYOR’S L.A. RIVER DAY OF SERVICE DEEMED A GRAND SUCCESS

This April 30^th Atwater Village was abuzz with community spirit as local villagers and volunteers from around the city participated in a brilliant day of cleanup and beautification projects at, in and around the Los Angeles River.

Heartfelt congratulations to Friends of the Los Angeles River’s (FOLAR) and the Mayor’s Office for combining “La Gran Limpieza” and LA River Day of Service, it made for a winning combination.

FOLAR’s annual “La Gran Limpieza” event to haul tons of trash out of the river was a huge success here in Atwater Village.  Friends of Atwater Village (FAV) sponsored Atwater’s cleanup site at the Sunnynook Bridge. We saw 200 + nature lovers swarm the banks and islands in the river hauling out items that included shopping carts, mattress springs, mattresses, hub caps, metal poles, bed frames and rags not to mention tons of plastic bottles and bags. It was a beautiful day to be on the river. Thank you to FOLAR and our volunteers for their hard work and dedication to our river.

Here in Atwater Village projects for the Mayor’s L.A. River Day of Service took place at two sites. At Sunnynook the path leading up to the river was regraded and new decomposed granite applied to make it safer. The path improvement was made possible through funding by the mayor’s office and the Atwater Village Neighborhood Council and the hard work of Ray Valentine of Maintaining Mother Earth. Also, the knoll area at the foot of the path was weeded, cleaned and replanted by volunteers from the Northland Village Church following the design plan of Kathy Oberg, the Fairy Yard Mother.

The second location was at Atwater Avenue Elementary School, just blocks from the river. At the main entrance of the school you will see new plantings, the design done by landscape architects and local residents Colin and Rebecca Rudolph, a mosaic tile design by Kacy Treadway along the steps as well as a mural by Rafael Escamilla that points “To the River”. Thank you to Atwater Ave School Principal Charles Smith for his continuous commitment to our school, its students and the community. Many parents and community volunteers worked to get these projects completed with funding through the mayor’s office and the Atwater Village Neighborhood Council.

Lastly, FAV would like to give special thanks and appreciation to Fabiola Vilchez (Central Area Director, Mayor’s Office) who kept the Atwater’s Day of Service Committee on track and focused going above and beyond with determination, enthusiasm and a smile.

OPPOSITION GROWS DESPITE “SALES-PITCH” FROM CRA/LA AND CD13 / CD4 THAT ATWATER VILLAGE WOULD BENEFIT FROM BEING DECLARED “BLIGHTED”

Community wide opposition to Atwater’s inclusion in the NELA River Redevelopment Project Area continues to grow despite “sales-pitch” by the Community Redevelopment Agency of Los Angeles (CRA/LA) and representatives from Council District 4 & 13.

CRA/LA is currently seeking to create a redevelopment project area in NELA. The proposed redevelopment project area would cover most NELA communities along the Los Angeles River, including significant sections of Atwater Village, with no regards to the integrity of long established community boundaries and land-use development uniformity. To be able to create a redevelopment project area neighborhoods within it must be declared “blighted”, regardless of community input or actual conditions in the neighborhood.

The Atwater Village Neighborhood Council (AVNC) already voiced their opposition to having Atwater Village declared “blighted”. Joining the AVNC in opposition are the Atwater Village Residents Association, the Atwater Village Chamber of Commerce and Friends of Atwater Village. Click here for opposition letters (pdf file)

Atwater Village History Book, Call for Help

Dear Fellow Atwater Villager,

This year, 2010, Atwater Village is celebrating its centennial. To help commemorate this important milestone Friends of Atwater Village (FAV), in partnership with Arcadia Publishing, is producing an Atwater Village photographic history book for the Images of America series.

In order to fully preserve Atwater’s history we are asking for help in obtaining old photographs, documents, newspaper articles, receipts or advertising from local businesses and any other historic information regarding Atwater Village between the years of 1900-2000. The book is a way to share and preserve your Atwater Village history and a great way to mark the Centennial of our neighborhood.

We hope that you could personally assist us in this preservation effort. We would appreciate any contribution of Atwater Village related photo and/or memorabilia you may have. The contribution would include your permission to duplicate and use the items for the book. Your treasured Atwater Village photo or other memorabilia would continue to be yours and remain in your position.

In addition, at the June 13th Atwater Village Centennial Street Festival FAV will be taking oral histories from those that would like to share their memories of Atwater Village’s past. We invite you to attend and share your oral history with us.

Friends of Atwater Village (FAV) in partnership with Arcadia Publishing will be producing an Atwater Village photographic history book for the Images of America series.

FRIENDS OF ATWATER VILLAGE (FAV) CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL COMMUNITY CLEAN UP

At 8 o’clock on Saturday morning March 27th, 2010 FAV members met at Luis Lopez Automotive on Fletcher Dr to help hand out brooms, shovels and trash bags supplied by the Office of Community Beautification and sign in volunteers for an Atwater Village Spring Cleanup.

Crews from the MTA, the River Keepers of the Los Angeles Conservation Corps and students from the Boys Republic joined community members to make Atwater sparkle. We swept weeded and picked up trash through out the community. Everyone worked hard to remove over grown weeds along the sidewalks on Fletcher Dr, clear weeds and trash on the Hyperion Bridge and give the median at Glenhurst Ave and Glenfeliz Blvd on Glendale Blvd a good cleaning. The River Keepers team also weeded and cleaned the parkway at Larga and Fletcher Dr. We would like to give a very special thank you to community members Steve and Judy Korin, David Eder, Ketty from The Atwater Playhouse and Jacob Clark from Revo Café. Jacob was kind enough to think of all the volunteers and brought hot coffee to get us started and cases of water to keep us hydrated as we helped to make our community shine. Also a list was compiled of bulky items left on residential parkways and sent to the North Central Sanitation Dept so they can be removed as soon as possible.

Did you miss this clean up? No problem we are always looking for ways to keep Atwater clean and our next event will be to take part in Friends of the Los Angeles River’s Gran Limpeza on May 8th. Our location will be at the Sunnynook Bridge so mark the date then check our website at www.friendsofatwatervillage.org for updated information.

After a good cleaning, it is time to get things green! In April, earth month 2010, FAV will be planting drought-tolerant plants all along Glendale Blvd. In May, FAV wraps up their springtime efforts by sponsoring a site along the Los Angeles River (in Atwater Village) for Friends of LA River's annual Gran Limpeza.
