Arrest of Man Alleged to be Responsible for Death of LA Firefighter

LOS ANGELES - One day shy of the one year anniversary of the line of duty death of Los Angeles Firefighter Glenn L. Allen, an arrest and filing of charges against a suspect was made.

Candlelight Vigil for Fallen Los Angeles Firefighter Glenn AllenThe fatal fire occurred in the late evening of Wednesday February 16, 2011 at 1546 North Viewsite Drive in the Hollywood Hills area of Los Angeles. Firefighters arrived to find fire in the exterior wall of the structure, which then ran the walls and entered a concealed space in the ceiling. During the firefighting operations failure of the ceiling assembly constructed of drywall, wood framing, and water soaked insulation, resulted in a partial ceiling collapse, causing injury to four Los Angeles Firefighters and two Los Angeles County Firefighters, trapping three.

Sadly Firefighter Allen later succumbed to his injuries at 12:15 PM on Friday, February 18, 2011 at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. Glenn L. Allen was a Firefighter/Paramedic for over 36 years and last served at Fire Station 97. He was just two years away from retiring.

The Arson Investigation determined that the fire started at a gas fed fireplace type burner assembly.
Los Angeles Firefighter Glenn Allen Laid to Rest
A formal and detailed investigation ensued and now a year-long joint investigation between LAFD's Arson Unit that also included the assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF) along with LAPD's Robbery-Homicide Division (RHD) has now been capped off with a recent arrest.

In the evening of Saturday, February 11th 2012, Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) detectives with the assistance of agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested Gerhard Albert Becker, 48 of Palma De Mallorca, Spain as he exited a flight at Los Angeles International Airport. Becker, a German national, was identified as the suspect in the death of Firefighter Glen Allen, due to improper construction of the home and appliances. Mr. Becker the architect, home builder, and homeowner has been charged with one count of 192(b) PC, Involuntary Manslaughter, and is being held on 2 million dollars bail. He has plead not guilty.

At a press conference on Wednesday, February 15, 2012, LAFD Fire Chief Brian Cummings stated, "I want to thank the members of the LAFD Arson Counter-Terrorism Section, Los Angeles Police Department Robbery Homicide Division, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the FBI for their diligence in pursuing this case and filing these charges."

Beloved LAFD Employee Remembered on 7th Anniversary of Glendale Metrolink Collision

This morning with sadness, the men and women of your Los Angeles Fire Department recall a tragic incident at our City border that injured more than two hundred rail passengers and killed eleven, including a deeply valued member of our LAFD family.

Today is the 7th anniversary of the January 26, 2005 Metrolink collision in Glendale that took the life of Julia Bennett, a Senior Clerk Typist for the LAFD's Bureau of Fire Prevention and Public Safety.

In the days, weeks and months since the massive and well-coordinated response to the collision and derailment - determined to have been a homicidal act, we have dearly missed Julia and her bright smile.

When visiting the Los Angeles Civic Center, we warmly welcome you to pause in Room 1705 at City Hall East, a meeting space not far from Julia's desk, which was proudly named in her honor as the Julia Bennett Conference Room. There, on a daily basis in "Julia's place", the men and women of LAFD's Fire Prevention Bureau gather to plan for the protection of Los Angeles under the watchful and caring spirit of a beloved friend, colleague and mentor.

Thank you Julia, for making an eternal impression on those who protect life and property in our great City. You are dearly missed today and every day.

Fire Claims Life of Pacoima 'Senior' on Christmas Morn

PACOIMA - The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a small fire on Christmas Morning that sadly claimed the life of a "senior" resident at an independent-living facility.

At 10:19 am, Firefighters responded to a reported "Structure Fire" at 11060 North Norris Avenue. They quickly ascended the six-story "Pledgerville Senior Citizen Villa" and had to force-entry into a single unit on the third floor, where they found a smoke-filled apartment.

Quick work was made of the small fire that required merely a single fire-extinguisher. Unfortunately, little time was also required for the fire to have tragically claimed the life of the unit's 90 year-old, female resident. She apparently had lived alone.

The fire-fatality required the LAFD's Arson/Counter-Terrorism Section to respond, where they spent most of Christmas Day conducting their investigation. The fire was deemed "accidental" in nature and Investigators stated "the most probable cause as candles...that appeared to have somehow ignited the victim's clothing." The manner in which that took place is unclear, as the fire remains under active investigation. The victim's official cause of death will be determined by the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner. Dollar-loss estimates were not yet available.

The LAFD extends their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, for this tragic loss. Your LAFD is saddened by such incidents and finds them extremely difficult to report, especially on Christmas Day. We do so only to highlight safety and underscore the importance of exercising extreme caution anytime you are around or in use of an open flame, regardless of the source. This holds true not only through the Holiday Season, but at all times.

Friends, there are numerous articles that can be found in our archives, here, on www.fergco.co, some of which are "linked" in this article. Please take the time to review them with your loved ones. Simple steps and observance of key safety tips can help prevent tragedy from occurring.

Please allow yourselves to spend your Holiday Season with family and friends...SAFELY! And from all of us at the Los Angeles Fire Department...today, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas!!

LAFD Mourns Passing of Chief Helicopter Pilot Glenn V. Smith

LAFD Chief Helicopter Pilot Glenn V. Smith (1956-2011)
LAFD Chief Helicopter Pilot Glenn V. Smith
(1956-2011)
The men and women of the Los Angeles Fire Department mourn a pillar of our Department, Chief Helicopter Pilot Glenn V. Smith, who recently lost a courageous battle with cancer at age 54.

If you've seen an LAFD helicopter in flight, or listened to the calm coordination of Fire Department air operations in Los Angeles via scanner radio, chances are you experienced in some small way, Glenn's remarkable career of lifesaving work, which included being a two-time recipient of the LAFD Medal of Valor.

Glenn Victor Smith was born in Lake Providence, Louisiana on October 29, 1956. The youngest of five boys in his family, and number 12 in a line of 17 children, he moved as a young boy to Los Angeles, growing up just south of the central city.

Glenn attended Los Angeles High School where he played the trumpet in the school marching band. In 1975, he married Marva Lajoy, his bride for life. In 1978, he was proudly appointed to the Los Angeles Fire Department, where he earned a reputation as a quick study. Soon becoming a skilled firefighter and a compassionate paramedic, he ultimately decided... (read more...)

LAFD Remembers Duke: Beloved Canine Responder Dies Month Prior to 9-11 Anniversary

From our friends at the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation...

Duke
Duke, a male Chocolate Lab, was born on August 22, 1997. Purchased by Doris and Larry Bilderback of Salinas as a hunting dog, Duke demonstrated very early on that he had other aspirations... he knew he was much better suited to the life of a Search Dog. That's when they decided to contact the Search Dog Foundation (SDF).

Evaluated as a potential Search Dog, Duke passed the tests with ease. He was soon brought to the home of Debra Tosch, SDF's Executive Director, in Ojai, California where he lived for two months. Debra prepared him for his official training program at Sundowners Kennel, the facility in Gilroy, California where all SDF dogs train.

Duke was paired with his handler Howard Orr, a firefighter with the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, in 1999 - where he found a real home and they became a valuable team. Duke and Howard were loyal partners on the job and formed a strong bond through their continual training schedule. This schedule meant they trained every week with the other canines and handlers in their SDF Training Group. They worked continuously on search and rescue skills, maintaining top form so they would be ready for deployment at a moment’s notice. They also achieved Advanced Certification from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), making them able to respond across the nation as a Canine Disaster Search Team.

Howard Orr and Duke
As part of the Los Angeles Fire Department's FEMA Task Force (CA-TF1), Howard & Duke responded to numerous deployments during their 9-year career, including the La Conchita mudslide in January 2005, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in August and September 2005, the Paso Robles Earthquake of 2003, the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002, and their very first deployment at the Echo Park Building Collapse in 2000. However, out of all the deployments they responded to, the one they are most recognized for is their response to Ground Zero in the days following the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

After many years of searching, Duke retired to spend time with Howard and his family at home in Thousand Oaks, CA. He still loved his toys and an easy search every now and then, but certainly enjoyed his retirement.

After struggling for months with several health issues, Duke crossed the Rainbow Bridge on August 8, 2011, with Howard by his side. As one of the founding teams in the Southern California area, Howard & Duke helped form the solid foundation that many of our current Search Teams have relied on when first beginning their journeys as disaster search canine handlers. Duke will be greatly missed by those that knew and worked with him as well as those that may never have met this great dog but admired his work from afar. Duke’s pawprints will be big ones to fill and we will all miss him immensely.

The 'Ride for 9-11' Makes an Emotional Detour to Meet the People of Joplin

We've written proudly in recent weeks about a small cadre of firefighters on a nationwide bicycle trek to commemorate the September 11, 2001 attacks on our nation.

Since beginning their journey in Los Angeles on July 24, these participants in the Ride For 9-11 have been unfazed by rain, triple-digit heat and hail, adhering strictly to a daunting schedule and course that will bring them to New York City in time for the tenth anniversary of that dark day.

With focus, pride and perseverance, they have kept on-course, until today...

Joplin, Missouri was not one of the group's original stops - but in the words of rider Jim Prabhu, an LAFD Firefighter/Paramedic:

"We've made a stop here in Joplin, Missouri in light of what happened here several months ago. We wanted to make sure that we paid our respect and saw it first hand, what exactly occurred."

We thank Jim and all participants in the Ride For 9-11, not only for their charitable effort in raising funds for the Wounded Warrior Project and the Dennis Leary Firefighter Foundation, but also for serving as emissaries of Los Angeles and the Fire Service in extending sympathies to the people of Joplin.

LAFD Mourns the Passing of a Fellow Firefighter

As you may have recently heard, the men and women of the Los Angeles Fire Department are mourning the off-duty passing of fellow Firefighter Eric Shepherd.

The LAFD would like to share some additional information about this very special man...

Eric Shepherd was born on July 12th, 1978 at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. Raised in Carson, California, Eric graduated from Long Beach Jordan High School in 1996. Later that year, Eric joined the United States Air Force and served as a firefighter in Kuwait and at home at Edwards Air Force Base. After four years of dedicated service to his country, Eric was honorably discharged as a Senior Airman.

In July of 2003, Eric joined the Los Angeles Fire Department. Following the drill tower and probationary assignments, Eric transferred to Fire Station 29 in Battalion 11, serving the Wilshire Center and Mid-City areas of Los Angeles. Widely recognized as a conscientious and talented firefighter, as well as a generous and genuine friend, Eric quickly earned the respect and admiration of his peers and the public he proudly served. He successfully tested for the rank of engineer and was looking forward to the added challenges and responsibilities of the promotion.

Eric died suddenly while off-duty on July 18th, 2011. He is survived by his father, Ronald and his stepmother Cindy, his mother Loretta, sister Rene, and the love of his life Cacherel Smaith, with whom he brought into this world and raised as the apple of his eye, his daughter Sarai.

He was a credit to his family and friends, his country, the fire service and his department. His warmth, laughter, and easy going demeanor will always be cherished. Eric will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

Firefighter Eric Shepherd was assigned to Fire Station 29 "C" Platoon.

All members of the community are welcome to join us in celebrating the life of Firefighter Eric Shepherd.
