Public Invited to Remember 9-11 in Los Angeles

In many ways, it is hard to believe that twelve years have passed since our nation was savagely attacked on September 11, 2001. While time moves forward, it in no way lessens the resolve of firefighters who loudly pledge:

The men and women of the Los Angeles Fire Department warmly welcome you to stand with them in fulfilling this pledge, as they gather for Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance events on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at five separate locations.

Memorial Service Held for LAFD Captain Matthew McKnight

LOS ANGELES - A well-attended memorial service was held today in Westlake Village, to honor fallen Los Angeles Fire Department Captain/Paramedic Matthew G. McKnight.

Captain McKnight died suddenly while on duty August 12, 2013 at the LAFD Metropolitan Fire Communication Center, where he supervised the life safety needs of America's second largest City.

Captain McKnight, age 51 - a thirty-one year veteran of the LAFD, is survived by a wife and two young children, as well as two brothers who are active-duty City of Los Angeles Firefighters.

LAFD Mourns the Passing of Captain II Jeffrey K. Johnson

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) will say goodbye to Captain II Jeffrey K. Johnson, who passed away while off-duty on Monday, July 29, 2013. Captain Johnson was an active member of the LAFD and was assigned to Fire Station 29, “B” Platoon, serving the communities within the Wilshire district.

Captain Johnson joined the LAFD on March 1, 1981. He served the Los Angeles community for just over 32 years. He will be missed by the men and women of the Los Angeles Fire Department. Members of the LAFD who had the privilege of working with Captain Johnson have described him as being a quiet, conscientious and talented leader who cared for the people in the community he so proudly served as well as his firefighter family.  

Memorial and funeral services will be held on Friday, August 9, 2013 where the LAFD will say its final farewell to Captain Jeffrey K. Johnson. The public is invited to join, as we together mourn his passing.

LAFD Mourns Death of Off-Duty Firefighter Stephenie A. Glas

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of a beloved member of our
Los Angeles Fire Department family.

The untimely passing of Firefighter Stephenie A. Glas, occurred last Saturday evening, June 9, 2012, while she was off-duty in Malibu, the community she called home. Glas, age 37, joined the LAFD in August 2005 and was assigned to Fire Station 93 in Tarzana, at the time of her passing.

The public is invited to join the LAFD and the family and friends of Firefighter Stephenie A. Glas, when we gather together to mourn her passing. We kindly ask you to keep Firefighter Glas, her colleagues and loved-ones in your thoughts and prayers.

LAFD Offers Memorial Day Weekend Safety Tips

The 2012 version of Memorial Day is upon us. For many, it represents the first days of Summer. With that, comes: first exposure (or maybe just over-exposure) to the sun, first cook-outs or BBQs on the grill (or over-exposure to the grill..yes, too much to eat) and the first time back into the refreshing waters of the ocean or pool.  

You may spend the Holiday Weekend at home with your family or a small group. You may opt to travel by air, road or rail and spend it with the masses or perhaps with a huge group that just happens to resemble your family. However you choose to spend it, please take a look at a few safety tips that may ensure a long and very pleasant Memorial Day Weekend... despite those distant relatives that all decided to visit from the East Coast. (Of course we're kidding!) 

These Memorial Day Weekend Safety Tips are provided with help from our friends at the County of Los Angeles Public Health and a few of our own, we thought were worth mentioning:

• Cook, grill or BBQ intelligently. Use clean plates, store food properly and prepare it correctly.
• Avoid prolonged sun exposure and sun damage. Wear sunscreen. Apply it generously and often.
• Be aware of changing weather conditions. Find or tune into a news source.
• Be aware of changing traffic conditions, road closures and other delays.
• Pool safely and always have someone watching the water.
• If you take to the mountains for some hiking or biking, don't go alone. Hike/bike during daylight hours. Hydrate and pack a snack. Don't underestimate the terrain. And if you have one, take a mobile phone with you and make sure it's charged.
• If you choose to imbibe, don't drink and drive! We all know the sobering statistics. Appoint a designated driver, use a designated driver service (there are many) or call a cab.

Enjoy the weekend. Enjoy family and friends. Enjoy foods and libations (in moderation.) And enjoy the freedom and liberty that was made possible by those the men and women who served and do serve in the United States Armed Forces. Please take pause, if only for a moment, and give thanks to those who have had the courage to enlist, shown the strength and commitment to serve and to those who gave it all. This weekend especially, we remember!
