URGENT ACTION ALERT FROM VDK COALITION
TODAY AT THE LOS ANGELES COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT(LACCD) BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING, THE FATE OF 3052-3070 N. SAN FERNANDO ROAD MAY ALREADY BE SEALED IN A BACKROOM DEAL. WHY DOES THAT ADDRESS SOUND FAMILIAR??? IT’S WHERE DENNY’S, POLLO LOCO AND AUTO ZONE ARE LOCATED NEXT TO THE VAN DE KAMP’S SITE.
ACCORDING TO THE AGENDA ITEM, THE BOARD WILL BE VOTING TO ADOPT A RESOLUTION 1) EXEMPTING THEM FROM THE CALIFORNIA QUALITIY ENVIROMENTAL ACT (CEQA) FOR THAT PROPERTY (CITING THAT THE DISTRIST HAS NO PLANS FOR THAT SITE) AND 2) APPROVE THE PURCHASE AND SALE FOR 5 MILLION DOLLARS USING MEASURE J BOND MONEY.

THE VDK COALITION HAS DOCUMENTS SHOWING THAT LACCD MAY ALREADY HAVE PLANS FOR THAT PROPERTY. IN 2007, LACCD AUTHORIZED PRIVATE PUBLIC VENTURES TO INVEST AND DEVELOP POTENTIAL SITES FOR THE PURPOSES TO GENERATE REVENUE FOR THE DISTRICT. IN APRIL 2008, PRIVATE PUBLIC VENTURES PRESENTED THEIR SENARIOS TO THE LACC ACADEMIC SENATE TO DEVELOP THE UNUSED PORTION OF THE VAN DE KAMPS SITE AND LEASE IT FOR 99 YEARS. IN TURN, THEY WOULD GIVE LACC A PERCENTAGE OF THE REVENUE. THEY PRESENTED TWO SCENARIOS, ONE WAS A STRIP TYPE MALL AND THE OTHER WAS FOR A 4 STORY, 191 MULTI-FAMILY UNITS AND 382 PARKING SPACES (2 SPACES PER UNIT) AT THE CORNER OF SAN FERNANDO ROAD AND FLECTHER DRIVE. INSTRUCTORS AT THAT MEETING WERE LIVID, REMEMBERING THE DEBACLE OF THE INFAMOUS DRIVING RANGE AT LACC, THEY VOTED NO TO THIS PROPOSAL.

NOW THAT THE VAN DE KAMPS SITE UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE DISTRICT, WHY ARE THEY BUYING THIS LAND? SINCE THIS SITE IS NO LONGER A COMMUNITY COLLEGE, IS IT EXEMPT FROM CEQA AND LOCAL ZONING LAWS? CORRECTION, A RECENT LETTER TO ASSEMBLYMEMBER KEVIN DE LEON FROM LACCD BOT PRESIDENT MONA FIELD’S STATE’S AND WE QUOTE, “IN THE EVENING, ALL OF THE NEW EDUACATION BUILDING WILL BE USED FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGE CLASSES THAT WE EXPECT WILL BE OFFERED BY LOS ANGELES CITY COLLEGE AND ONE OR MORE OF THE LACCD COLLEGES”. QUESTION- WHY DIDN’T THE DISTRICT OPEN THE SITE AS A COMMUNITY COLLEGE? WHERE ARE THEY GOING TO GET THE MONEY TO PAY THESE INSTRUCTORS WHEN THEY ARE CANCELING CLASSES AND SESSIONS? WHY HAS IT TAKEN 9 YEARS AND 70? MILLION DOLLARS TO CONSTRUCT TWO BUILDINGS? WHY DID THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES VOTE ON NOVEMEBR 4TH TO ALLOCATE $400,000 TO QUATRO DESIGN GROUP TO REDESIGN THE HISTORIC VAN DE KAMPS BAKERY FOR THEIR NEW TENNANTS USING BOND MONEY TO CONSTRUCT COMMUNITY COLLEGES? GONE ARE THE ART STUDIOS THAT RAUL DE LA SOTA, RENOUN HISPANIC ARTIST AND HIGHLAND PARK RESIDENT HELPED DESIGN, COMPUTER LABS AND CLASSROOM SPACE, NOW JUST OFFICE SPACE. MEANWHILE THE DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS IS BEING COMPLETELY REMODELED.
THAT’S WHAT THE VAN DE KAMPS COALITION HAS BEEN ASKING WHEN LACC VOTED TO TURN OVER THE SITE TO LACCD. MANY QUESTIONS ASKED, NO REAL ANSWERS GIVEN.
WHY HAS THE LOS ANGELES COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT REFUSED TO HONOR OUR REPEATED REQUESTS FOR PUBLIC DOCUMENTS UNDER THE CALIFORNIA PUBLIC RECORDS ACT? ON DECEMBER 29, 2009, IT WILL BE SIX MONTHS THAT THE DISTRICT HAS DENIED THE PUBLIC THE RIGHT TO KNOW WHAT ITS GOVERNMENT AND ELECTED OFFICIALS ARE DOING WITH THE TAXPAYERS MONEY. NO BUDGET CRISIS SHOULD ALLOW THE GOVERNMENT OR ELECTED OFFICIALS FROM INVESTIGATING AND PROSECUTING ILLEGAL ACTIVITY. WHAT IS LACCD HIDING?
ACTION ALERT: CALL OR EMAIL MONA FIELDS, PRESIDENT OF LACCD BOARD OF TRUSTEES AT fieldm@laccd.edu or (213) 891-2044 OR CALL TYREE WIEDER, INTERIM CHANCELLOR AT (213) 891-2201. TELL WHAT THEY ARE DOING IS WRONG. THEY HAVE COMPLETELY DENIED ANY COMMUNITY INPUT ON WHAT THEY WANT IN THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES. WE WANT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE NOT APARTMENTS.
CALL COUNCILMEMBER REYES AT (213)485-0763 OR EMAIL AT councilmember.reyes@lacity.org, COUNCIL PRESIDENT GARCETTI AT (213) 485- 7013 OR EMAIL AT councilmember.garcetti@lacity.org, and ASSEMBLYMEMBER DE LEON AT (323) 225-4545 OR EMAIL AT Assemblymember.deLeon@assembly.ca.gov. LET THEM KNOW THAT YOU WANT THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE BACK, ASK FOR AN IMMEDIATE AUDIT AND INVESTIGATION OF OUR TAXPAYERS MONEY, YOU WANT AN OPEN AND TRANSPARENT PROCESS, STOP BLOCKING OUT THE COMMUNITY FROM WHAT THEY WANT WITH YOUR TAXPAYERS MONEY.
