LAFD Wants to Protect Children from Burns and Scalds

On June 18, 2012, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responded to a residence in the Rampart area of Los Angeles where two young children sustained significant burn injuries while in their kitchen.

As you know, young children are at high risk of being burned by hot food and liquids. Please join the LAFD in taking a moment to survey your kitchen to prevent needless burn injuries from happening to you and your loved ones.

Based on this recent incident we urge you to follow these brief safety tips...
  • Keep children away from cooking areas by enforcing a "kid-free zone" of 3 feet around the stove or any place where hot food or drink is being prepared or carried.
  • Keep hot foods and liquids away from table and counter edges.
  • When young children are present, use the stove's back burners whenever possible.
  • Never hold a child while cooking, drinking, or carrying hot foods or liquids.
  • Teach children that hot things burn.
  • When children are old enough, teach them to cook safely. Supervise them closely.
