Living better in Ontario

Harold didn’t take the news too well that the Ontario Energy Board announced another increase in our electricity bills---2.9% this time, effective May 1st. I don’t know if he was too tired from working to turn our backyard garden shed into a privy so we don’t have to have the well pump on too much, or maybe it’s that bump on the head he got from falling down going to the bathroom in the night the other week (I took out all the night lights to save power).

The power rate increase is bad enough, he said, but then when I told him the Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli was on CFRB saying we all “just have to conserve more” I thought his head was going to pop off.

“Conserve MORE?” he said. “The lights are off all over this place, I don’t even have them on timers any more because of some stupid ‘phantom electricity’, the bills are twice what they were since that so-called ‘smart meter’ went in, you already hang out the clothes to dry even when it’s freezing outside, and they want us to conserve more?”

He paused and then said sadly, “I haven’t had an oven-cooked dinner in ages. What happened to Sunday roast dinners? And why do we have to wait until after seven o’clock to cook dinner?”
