Growing Your Biz in 2013 - Honey Boo Boo

Guest Blog from Carol Ritter of CarolTalks.com

I had the pleasure of attending an educational lecture this week, sponsored by King Spry Herman Freund Faul law firm and Lehigh University’s Center for Developing Urban Education.  Dr. Yong Zhao, internationally known scholar, author and speaker presented Valuing Customization and Creativity in Education in an Era of Standardization.  I thought I was going to an educational lecture, but, in fact, I was at a “Grow UR Biz” with the entrepreneurship spirit lecture.

Dr. Zhao began by sharing with the audience the focus of public education on test scores.  He cited that Asian countries have been outscoring the US in math and science for years.  Interestingly, the countries with the higher Program for International Student Assessment or PISA scores lacked the confidence and creativity to express their entrepreneurial capabilities.  “China wants to be like the US, producing entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates and the US wants to be like China with high test scores.” said Dr. Zhao.

I wondered if the job market is out of touch with education or is education out of touch with today’s and tomorrow’s job market. Jobs in the US have changed from the standard farming and  manufacturing to creating services and consulting.

His research shows that a very high percentage of college graduates are not working today and are living in their parent’s basements.  Many because the jobs today don’t match the education they received.

He used the example of Kim Kardashian, what does she do?  What is her talent and how was she prepared for the workforce?  Or maybe Honey Boo Boo, what does she do?  What is her talent?  The thing they both have in common is that they have created value which leads to creating jobs.  Honey’s mom and Kim’s mom share Dr. Zhoa’s non-cognitive factors for entrepreneurial success.  They have confidence, they are risk takers, they have passion, they are creative, they are alert to opportunities, unique, and emphatic.  Do their test scores count? Have their scores brought them success and financial comfort?

Three Qualities the New Business owner must have...
1. Creativity
2. An Entrepreneurial Spirit
3. Globally Competency

Three Qualities not necessary for starting a business
1. High Test Scores
2. High Test Scores
3. High Test Scores

A sign hangs high in the human resources department of Apple.  “If you want to be managed, you’re not employable.”  Think about that.   You can learn more about Dr.  Zhao at www.zhaolearning.com

If you want to learn more about Honey Boo Boo, just don’t!

Business News in the Lehigh Valley, 3/18/13

Good morning, and happy Monday Lehigh Valley! Here's hoping you had a great, restful weekend and you're ready to take on the week.

After 17 years of holding their training camp at Lehigh University, the Philadelphia Eagles have announced that they will no longer be returning to Bethlehem, and instead remain closer to home in Philadelphia, with practice sessions at Lincoln Financial Field and invitation-only sessions at the NovaCare Complex.

The Pennsylvania Senate and House of Representatives designated March 13, 2013 as "Industrial Resource Center Day" in Pennsylvania, reflecting the growth of the state's manufacturing sector. A total of seven industrial resources centers are located throughout the state, including Manufacturers Resource Center, a Bethlehem-based economic development and manufacturing consulting organization that advances the performance of manufacturing companies.

The roads may be somewhat slick today as more winter weather is expected to come our way. Forecasts are calling for a winter weather advisory for most of the area until around 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.

In local news, an apartment fire over the weekend has tragically claimed four lives in Emmaus. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Power of Partnerships - Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce

By Tony Iannelli, President and CEO, Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce
March 11, 2013

For the past 15 years, it has been my honor to preside over the fastest growing Chamber of Commerce in the United States. Serving 800 members in 1998 when I began this journey through today, we now close in on 6,000 members strong, and there is no doubt as to how that growth came to fruition. It can easily be summed up by our mantra: "The Power of Partnerships," business leaders coming together for the common good of the Lehigh Valley — that's how this Chamber, the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, became the ninth largest in the United States.

The growth from a small-town organization to what we've become today didn't happen by chance. It happens when community leaders, stakeholders — from both the public and private sectors — agree to stand together and unite with one voice to focus on the needs of the entire community. In one word, "regionalization" positions this Valley on par with the larger municipalities in the state and nation. Move over Philadelphia and Pittsburgh — the Lehigh Valley has arrived!

I can't say enough about how impressed I am with the leadership in the Lehigh Valley municipalities, large and small. Their contribution to the Valley becoming the fastest growing and third most populous region in Pennsylvania has been immeasurable, and it is why it has become such an allure to people and businesses from neighboring states.

Boasting a $30 billion gross regional product, our metropolitan region is home to more than 820,000 people in Lehigh and Northampton counties in Pennsylvania and Warren County, N.J. If you look at our proximity to New York City (75 miles), Philadelphia (60 miles) and even Washington, D.C., (200 miles) — along with our affordable housing market and comparably low taxes — throw in an ever advancing quality of life — you will see how we've become the 64th most populated metropolitan area in the country.

I can't overstate our rapidly improving quality of life and its impact on our appeal as a destination. When it comes to sports, we've reached a higher level than we ever dreamed! We are proud to be the home to a Philadelphia Phillies affiliate in the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at Coca-Cola Park and soon a Philadelphia Flyers affiliate in the Lehigh Valley Phantoms at its new Allentown PPL Center arena.

Our arts community continues to thrive with gems like Easton's State Theatre and Crayola Experience, Bethlehem's SteelStacks complex, and the Allentown Art Museum. Any company looking for an educated talent pool should look no further than here, with its abundance of top-notch colleges (Lehigh, Muhlenberg, Lafayette, Cedar Crest, Penn State, Moravian, and Lehigh and Northampton community colleges) and exceptional technical institutions, as well.

Our current 15,300 employers in the Valley provide close to 300,000 jobs. We are proud to be the home-base to world renowned corporations such as Air Products and Rodale, and have welcomed nationwide manufacturers such as Sam Adams and Ocean Spray while always remembering that our small businesses are the backbone of our community.

More than two-thirds of Valley businesses employ nine or fewer people, and exist on every main street from Northampton to Coopersburg and Fogelsville to Phillipsburg, and everywhere in between. Providing those employers with the networking opportunities, innovative programming and pro-business public policy advocacy is the daily work of the 26-member Chamber staff located and working on every main street across this Valley.

Let me close by saying this economy won't escalate at the rapid pace of the '90s, but it will improve at a deliberate and steady pace. Businesses are running leaner and poised for expansion like never before. They are eager to expand in the coming years. I'm hopeful our political leaders will join us and make the necessary difficult decisions that will increase confidence in our nation's economic future. I look forward to a bright 2013-14 in a region that, no doubt has arrived.

Business News in the Lehigh Valley, 3/6/13

Good morning Lehigh Valley. Today the region is expected to get it's first significant amount of snow this winter, with forecasts calling for anywhere between 2-4 inches for most of the Lehigh Valley area. How every much your area does get, please be careful driving and take your time!

The Allentown Mayor's Breakfast was held this morning at Muhlenberg College's Seegers Union. Both the Bethlehem and Allentown Breakfasts sold out, but there's still a chance to reserve your spot at both the Phillipsburg Mayor's Lunch and the Easton Mayor's Breakfast.

The Lehigh Valley has ranked as No. 9 in Site Selection Magazine's Top 10 Metro Areas with populations between 200,000 and 1 million, with a project count of 24 in 2012. Pennsylvania finished third in the nation with 430 new or expanded corporate facilities in 2012.

Sam Adams Beer and the Rising Tide Community Loan Fund of the Lehigh Valley have announced they will expand their program that helps small business owners. The program provides coaching, mentoring and educational resources to small business owners in the food & beverage, brewing, and hospitality industries.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average reached a record high on Tuesday, climbing more than 125 points to close at 14,253.77, while the S&P 500 finished at its highest level since October 2007. On the jobs side, the ADP National Employment Report showed that private-sector employment increased by 198,000 jobs in February.

In world news, Venezuelan President Huge Chávez passed away yesterday, 21 months after he first revealed he had a tumor.

Today's Business News in the Lehigh Valley, 12/7/12

Good morning and Happy Friday, Lehigh Valley! There are 24 days remaining in 2012, so get on those resolutions if you haven't already!

The U.S. Government announced today that 146,000 jobs were added in November and the unemployment rate dropped to 7.7%, the lowest since December 2008. Economists were surprised that Hurricane Sandy did not affect hiring as negatively as anticipated.

House Speaker John Boehner and President Obama continue to work on the fiscal cliff negotiations, and this time they are going into the negotiating room alone, increasing the chances of finding a suitable deal quickly. President Obama has stated that any deal on must ensure that there will not be another crisis over the debt ceiling early next year.

A medical device tax that was adopted as part of the 2010 health care reform will take effect at the end of the month, which will cut into the profit margins of multiple Lehigh Valley companies that make medical devices. The tax applies primarily to devices that are used by medical professionals and will not affect those sold over the counter directly to the consumer.

The Christmas season is in full swing in Bethlehem to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of being named "The Christmas City." On the North Side, Christmas City Village has been up for a few weekends now and Christkindlmarkt is underway on the SouthSide.

Today's Business News in the Lehigh Valley - 11/30/12

Good morning and happy Friday, Lehigh Valley! Today is already the last day of November.

The city of Springfield, Massachusetts was once a bustling industrial town, akin to what we once had here in Lehigh Valley. They have another thing in common too: The city is looking at the model of Bethlehem in Allentown as it 'reinvents' itself in the post-industrial age, specifically the building of a casino. Mayor Callahan stressed the importance of the many factors that contributed to Bethlehem's redevelopment, including the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks and the new Sands Bethlehem Event Center.

Ice River Springs Bottling Co., a Canadian based producer of bottled water in recycled bottles, has recently opened up a plant in Hanover Township. The family owned company will bring about 49 jobs to the Lehigh Valley region over the next three years.

The Allentown Arena project at 7th & Hamilton has resulted in real estate prices rising in the city, with higher demand due to the tax benefits offered to businesses by the Neighborhood Improvement Zone (NIZ). Many of these businesses moving in believe this arena will help put Allentown back on the map. Yesterday was the official ground-breaking for the arena, which will host The Lehigh Valley Phantoms (Philadelphia Flyers' minor league team) beginning in the 2014-2015 season.

If you haven't been to the Christmas City Village yet, this weekend is a great chance to get started on any holiday shopping you have to do. Tomorrow is the first day of December, after all!

Have a great weekend Lehigh Valley!

Business News in Lehigh Valley, 11/2/12

Good morning and happy Friday, Lehigh Valley. There are only 4 days left until the 2012 election.

U.S. employers added 171,000 jobs during the month of October, and the jobless rate inched up to 7.9% from 7.8% last month. Since July, the economy has created an average of 173,000 jobs a month, up from 67,000 a month from April through June.

Several retail stores and malls reopened in Lehigh Valley yesterday, welcoming swarms of shoppers stricken with cabin fever and ready to spend their money. After a few days without power, it's no surprise that the malls saw a larger than average crowd of people. Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem posted a record earning quarter, bringing in $24.3 million in revenue this past quarter, shattering the previous record of $18.2 million.

First Friday festivities in Bethlehem will be postponed until the second Friday, 11/9, when more of the downtown shops will be back up and running.

Daily Briefing, 10/3/12

Good morning and happy hump day! You're almost halfway through the work week.

In local news, A state judge has blocked Pennsylvania's tough voter-identification law from taking full effect during the November election yesterday. Voters will be asked for proper ID, but will still be allowed to cast ballots if they don't have it. Allentown now has the money it needs to build the hockey arena at 7th & Hamilton after selling out the bonds yesterday in just 4 hours for nearly a quarter billion dollars. Beginning next month, the city of Bethlehem will consider the possibility of naming a single contractor to haul the city's trash, which could save residents money and eliminate the complications of having 19 different haulers collecting throughout the city.

In national news, the private sector added roughly 162,000 jobs during the month of September and mortgage applications rose to a three-year high.

Have a great day!D

Unemployment in the USA, Pennsylvania and the Valley (Chart)

Our entry on school taxes last week got more views and comments than many previous ones, so we wanted to follow up with another relevant topic and accompanying graph - unemployment.  Take a look at the chart below that compares unemployment in the Valley with unemployment across the US and in Pennsylvania, starting in January 2008 and up to May 2012, the last month that numbers were available.

Okay, so what can we make of this chart?  A few points:

  • US and Pennsylvania unemployment rates are relatively smooth, while the Valley's tend to ebb and flow much more dramatically.  This makes sense; the Valley is a smaller geographical area, so when one large business opens or closes, it can have a more dramatic effect on the overall unemployment rate.
  • Pennsylvania has consistently had lower unemployment numbers than the country, something made even more impressive when you consider that Pennsylvania is a "rust belt" state that is supposed to still be struggling in its transition away from manufacturing.
  • In general, the Valley has had lower unemployment rates than the rest of the US, but higher rates than the rest of Pennsylvania.  Does this mean that it will take longer for the Valley to recover from the recession than the rest of the state?  And what exactly is causing this
If you have any insight we'd love to hear it from you; let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Economic slowdown?

I caught this story on CNN and it seemed worth elaborating on.  The story notes that two Federal Reserve Presidents are concerned that the recovery, already slow, may be slowing further.  The primary indicator of this is that GDP only grew 2.2% in the 1st quarter of 2012, compared to 3% in the last quarter of 2011.  The two men also noted that there are at least two potentially significant worries that the economy faces down the road: ongoing European debt issues and rising gas prices.  Both have cooled, at least for now, but could flare up again and damage our economic recovery.

There are also initial concerns that the job market is slowing as well.  For the second straight month, private job  growth dipped.  In April, the private sector only added 119,000 jobs, compared to 201 jobs in March and 228 jobs in February.  The same happened in the Valley, with a recent jobs report noting that the area lost 3,200 jobs - despite unemployment dropping to 7.9% from 8.1%.  The big report is expected this Friday, however, when the April unemployment numbers are expected to be released.

All indicators are preliminary, but its enough to get people worried.  What do you think?  Are you worried about the economy slowing down again, and is it something that you have noticed?  Let us know in the comments!

Fare marketing in Google
