Dear Atwater Ave Elementary and Atwater Village Community:
As many of you are aware, LAUSD is considering removing the Plant Manager position at each school. This will drastically change our custodial support and put the health of our students and staff in danger. We have a great school and our Plant Manager has played a vital role in making sure our school is clean and attractive.
The LAUSD Board of Education will vote this TUESDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2010 on a resolution that requires elementary schools to have a full time plant manager. The Board resolution is supported by three board members, however, Yolie Flores-Aguilar, our board member, has not yet committed to support this resolution. Ms. Flores-Aguilar needs to hear from the parents, so please take a few minutes to write her an email or call her to let her know that you support the Board resolution to have a plant manager at each elementary school. Let her know that you want her to vote YES on this resolution.
Below you will find a copy of a letter from parents at another local elementary school, with a little section added about Tuesday’s vote and our request that Ms. Flores-Aguilar support it. You may use this letter or personalize one based on your experiences at Atwater Avenue Elementary. Please take a minute to fill in your name at the bottom, personalize the letter however you wish, and e-mail or fax it to her office. I strongly encourage you to call her as well. Please help – she needs to know that we are expecting her support!
Keeping our students safe and healthy and providing the best learning environment possible is a priority and we can make a difference.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Dear Ms. Flores,
We understand there will be a vote at Tuesday’s board meeting on a motion to require all elementary schools to have Plant Managers. We urge you, for the safety of our children, to vote in favor of this motion.
I'm a parent at Atwater Avenue Elementary and am writing in support of the Plant Manager position at our school. In recent years, I've watched our school's API scores and student population grow, even while our budget has been steadily cut. This last budget cut idea however has the potential to put our school's growth and our students' health at risk. We need our Plant Manager to keep our school grounds clean and healthy, and to allow our teachers much needed time to plan lessons and go about their jobs as educators.
Taking up more of our teachers' time on non-educational activities, like cleaning or supervising the lunch tables, is not a way to continue our school's amazing growth. In addition, our school was hit hard last year by the H1N1 epidemic. I would hate to think how losing our plant manager at this crucial time, the start of cold and flu season, might impact our childrens' health. On a very basic level, our children need clean restrooms and a clean environment in which to learn. Once we compromise these basic elements of a school environment, we all lose.
Thank you for your assistance in helping protect the students, parents, faculty, and staff of Atwater Avenue Elementary.
Best Regards,
