If you haven’t read it I would recommend Victoria Winckler’s latest post over on the Bevan Foundation blog on the Government’s new welfare to work scheme ‘The Work Programme’ which makes sobering reading.
She makes a lot of good points about the chosen providers and more generally about the policies being pursued, but two points in particular stood out for me.
Given the reliance of many Welsh families on Job Seekers Allowance, Incapacity Benefit, Income Support, Housing Benefit and other benefits nothing has been reported in the Welsh press and there has been total silence from Welsh politicians since the announcement of the successful companies awarded contracts to deliver the new programme since it was made last Friday.
Why does it matter, we are at the start of an Assembly Election Campaign where the state of the Welsh economy and jobs will be debated endlessly by all the parties, politicians, the press and us bloggers, which makes me wonder why so little attention is paid to a part of the economic agenda particularly here in Wales, namely welfare to work that affect so many lives.Any source
