The crimes that resulted in a suspended death sentence for a former senior Inner Mongolia official - the highest-ranking senior cadre fully prosecuted in the region since President Xi Jinping came to power - were detailed yesterday.
Yang Hanzhong, 59, the former deputy chief of the region's politics and law commission, was convicted by Baodou Intermediate People's Court on Monday for taking more than 40 million yuan (HK$50.5 million) in bribes and illegally amassing 21 properties.
His death sentence was suspended for two years, a common penalty for corrupt cadres which often results in a life sentence.
Xinhuanet.com reported yesterday that Yang had acquired 21 properties across Beijing, Guangdong, Hainan , Shandong and Inner Mongolia over the last decade. He also possessed more than 15.6 million yuan in ill-gotten cash.
The original indictment also accused Yang of abusing his power to shift nearly 50 million yuan in land compensation fees from property developers to the municipal government, according to the report.
Yang was born into a poor family in Shanxi's Yanggao county and once had a reputation for being honest and hard-working.
Sometime after 2000, he started taking bribes from property developers in exchange for helping them win property deals and construction projects.
The case may be a prelude to a similar investigation involving Wang Suyi , a member of Inner Mongolia's elite party standing committee.
Wang, who also led the region's united front committee, was placed under internal investigation this summer and expelled from the party last month.
The party's anti-graft watchdog accused Wang of "taking advantage of [his] posts to seek benefits for others" and "accepting large amounts of money and property, either directly or through family members".
