Do you support Ontario’s agri-food sector?

A letter to the Premier

In an article “You have a government that wants to support you: Wynne to growers” (Niagara This Week, Grimsby Lincoln edition, June 19, 2013, P.2 – 3) you are quoted as saying “we need to make sure that we continue to preserve farmland” and “I feel so strongly that our economy in Ontario needs to play to our strengths and one of our strengths is our agri-foods sector.”

Isn’t this message contradictory to your current pursuit of wind energy across rural Ontario’s prime farm land?

Please calculate exactly how many acres of agricultural land have been lost and will continue to be devoured as new FIT contracts receive Renewable Energy Approval (REA).

Here are some estimates based on the information provided by Niagara Region Wind Corporation (NRWC) for its proposed 77 135m (to the hub) 3 MV wind energy project in West Lincoln, Wainfleet and Haldimand Townships. Each industrial wind turbine plus access road will require approximately 3 acres of active farm land. This results in a total of 231 acres removed from agricultural production. Additionally there are two storage sites of about 10 acres each plus two substations of about 1 acre each including access roads. The total of lost farm land is now 253 acres for NRWC’s proposed project. Read more »
