Los Angeles Firefighters Respond to Helicopter Crash in Griffith Park

GRIFFITH PARK - A small private helicopter on a routine flight over Los Angeles made a hard landing after experiencing mechanical problems, today in Griffith Park, four people aboard suffered minor injuries.

Just after 2:00 PM the Los Angeles Fire Department received multiple 9-1-1 calls regarding a downed helicopter near McComb Helispot, above the Roosevelt Municipal Golf Course.

The Robinson helicopter was on a routine flight from Redlands, circled over Santa Monica and was headed back to the Inland Empire when it started experiencing mechanical trouble.

Fortunately, the pilot and three passengers, a 25-year-old man and two women aged 33 and 25 all suffered only minor injuries that did not require hospitalization. A 50-year-old Park Ranger suffered heat exhaustion while responding to the scene and was hoisted into a LAFD helicopter and transported to a local hospital in serious condition.

Firefighters also quickly fixed additional concerns, including fuel leaking from the wreckage in the brush-covered surrounding area.

The Fire Department remained on-site for nearly four hours to assure safety, minimize environmental harm and preserve the scene for a coordinated investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board.

The Federal Aviation Administration's registry indicated the 2006 Robinson helicopter was owned by Mile High Rotors LLC, based in Colorado.
