Here is a snapshot of some of the highlights Allentown experienced in 2011 as well as goals for the Allentown Chamber in 2012. As we all know, there are many changes affecting our downtown, including the hockey arena and Entertainment District project. This was an idea presented by Mayor Pawlowski over a year ago and we are going through the final stages of making the project a reality. A good partnership of local government and private enterprise, assisted by our State Senator Pat Browne’s innovative Neighborhood Improvement Zone (NIZ) and bringing local taxes back home has helped fuel this major economic development project. The publicity and expectations are both high and realistic, and will make Allentown better and stronger for future generations.
Additionally, the 19th Street Theatre District is getting attention and a much-needed streetscape plans. Another major project that has been on the books for some time could get a head start this coming year: the final phase of linking the downtown to Airport Road through the American Parkway.
Needless to say, Allentown is moving in the right direction.
The Allentown Chamber was diligent in adding bright and dedicated individuals to our board and we are poised for great leadership in the coming years. Our goal for 2012 is to focus our resources and energy to meet the ever changing demands of our business community, while dealing with the needs of our citizenry. Issues that our board will tackle revolve around the sale of the Queen City Airport land and the development of that site.
