Cairns-based FNQ medics head on car rally from UK to Mongolia for charity

IT'S a mad, mad, mad, mad world but this time the loot is for charity and the contestants are a gang of emergency department workers at Cairns Hospital.

The FNQ Medics (a team of three emergency doctors, four emergency nurses, and three of their partners) is planning a self-funded car journey - a rally in fact - from the UK to Mongolia in July 2014, and to date all they have is the car door.

"We stumbled across a charity rally called the Mongol Rally which sees over 200 teams drive from the UK to Mongolia how you get from A to B is entirely up to you there is no fixed route, no external support and GPS is not allowed," emergency specialist Dr Annabel Somerville said.

"Teams must drive cars with an engine size under one litre in other words they must be entirely unsuitable for the distance."

Nurse Julie Lentas said money raised would go to an affordable ultrasound for the Royal Flying doctors used to diagnose people in remote areas and for a Bi-Pap machine at Cairns emergency department.
