Taiwan reaches semifinal in men's basketball at East Asian Games

Tianjin, China, Oct. 11 (CNA) Taiwan defeated Mongolia 100-72 in a men's basketball first round game at the 2013 East Asian Games in Tianjin on Friday, earning a spot in the semifinals, where it will face Japan.

The victory over Mongolia gave Taiwan a perfect 3-0 record in round robin play and first place in Group A after downing Guan 83-57 the previous day and Korea 79-76 on Oct. 9.

Fielding many of the players that led it to a fourth-place finish at the FIBA Asia Championships in early August in Manila, Taiwan jumped ahead of Mongolia 33-17 at the end of the first quarter and was never threatened at any time during the game.

Lin Chih-chieh led Taiwan with 22 points on 5-11 shooting from behind the three-point arc, while Chen Shih-chieh added 11.

The semifinals will take place on Oct. 13, with Taiwan to face Japan, which finished second in the three-team Group B. That same day, Group B winner China will play against Group A runner-up Korea.

Taiwan's head coach Hsu Chin-che said Japan would be a tough opponent because its roster also has many players from its Asia Championships team, and he expected to emphasize defense first and then think about how to get the offense going.

The finals will be held on Oct. 14.
