Federal Prosecutor In Northern Indiana To Announce Several New Public Corruption Matters Today

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Northern Indiana has always been more aggressive in prosecuting public corruption cases than its counterpart in the southern district. A press conference has been called this afternoon in Hammond to announce several new public corruption matters according to the Northwest Indiana Times, which is providing live coverage of the announcement at 2:00 p.m. Federal authorities in the northern district have prosecuted more than 60 people in public corruption probes since 1985.

UPDATE: Long-time Lake Co. Survey George Van Til (D) has been indicted for using county employees in his office and county equipment for political purposes. U.S. Attorney David Capp says a tip from a private citizen alerted federal investigators of Van Til's alleged wrongdoing. Capps alleges that Van Til even paid a county employee to swap out a hard drive on one of the computers in the office so evidence of political work performed on it couldn't be found by federal investigators.
