This EIR has been prepared because of successful litigation prosecuted by the Van de Kamps Coalition against the Los Angeles Community College District. In 2009, the Board of Trustees of LACCD, led by Board member Mona Field, voted to hand over half the Van de Kamps campus to a charter high school that has no business holding real estate developed with community college bond improvement funds.
This charter high school belongs down San Fernando Road at the Sotomayer Academies High School except for one problem: The charter school’s management (CEO Judy Burton) stubbornly refuses to vacate the Van de Kamps Campus and is lobbying the Board of Trustees to let them keep the campus for an indefinite period of time. How do you feel about paying hundreds of dollars a year taxes for a community college you did not get?
The other half of the campus, the Old Bakery Building, was remodeled using community college bond funds to benefit bureaucrats of work training programs. In the process, plans for eight classrooms in this building were trashed by Mona Field and other LACCD Board members and millions of bond dollars were unlawfully used to create Class A office space for non-profits championed by Antonio Villaraigosa.
When you go to the meeting on Thursday night, notice that there are no community college classrooms on the second floor of the Old Bakery Building. Mona Field and her Board cronies destroyed our community college for the political purpose to NOT OPEN the community college campus she promised to our community.
We expect that Mona Field and her cronies have long ago told the charter high school to turn out people for this meeting. As a voter and taxpayer who is being billed $100-200 per year by Mona Field and her LACCD cronies to rip you off and not provide the community college facility she promised, you have a right to attend this meeting, speak out, and tell the LACCD that you want them to implement the original community college campus plan that justified building the Van de Kamps Campus in the first place.
If you view the four options studied in the Draft EIR, you will note that Mona Field and her LACCD cronies are continuing to rip you off by refusing to study the original plan for opening Van de Kamps as a community college.

This Thursday evening may be your only chance to tell the LACCD Board of Trustees what you think of the actions they have been taking over the past years to deprive the young adults in Cypress Park, Glassell Park, Atwater Village, Highland Park, Mount Washington, and Eagle Rock of educational opportunities that were sold to us if we voted for the LACCD’s construction bond programs.
This is an outrageous “bait and switch” as we watch our local government institutions serve the interests of the wealthy board members who sit on the Board of the charter high school and Villaraigosa’s non-profits that need to move to a more appropriate location. We celebrate the accomplishments of the current students of the charter high school; but we condemn the corrupt actions of the management of the charter high school to seek to deprive young adults in our community access to the $91 million campus developed for ADULT EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY.
Van de Kamps was built for adult education – not 9-12 graders. It is time for the community to voice its opposition to further deprivation of our community at the hands of political misconduct and scandal.
