Carwyn Jones interview with Huw Edwards

It’s sadly reflective of the lack of interest and importance of welsh politics that an interview with Carwyn Jones by Huw Edwards on tonight’s Wales Report only made headlines on the BBC Wales website because of what the First Minister said about meeting possible investors about Cardiff Airport. Would a similar interview with David Cameron or Alex Salmond go unnoticed?

Strangely the report left out the fact Carwyn said in his interview its important when he travels abroad that he can tell people Wales has an International Airport, what even one that’s been dying a slow death for 20 years and the tax payer got ripped off on sale price earlier this year?

Anyway there were a few other little gems worth sharing

The first was Carwyn’s lack of a straight answered when pressed over whether he would have sacked former Education Minister Leighton Andrew if he hadn’t resigned over campaigning over his own school closure policy. We can say that’s a no then proving the First Minister's lack of decisiveness and leadership again.

The second was to call voters stupid over the Welsh Government’s health reform, Carwyn said that people didn’t really understand the medical grounds need for changes and were campaigning to keep services mainly from a civic pride perspective – really First Minister I thought most were campaigning because of medical concerns and a lack of trust in your Government over the real reasons for reforming health services.

Then we had possibly the best line ever on economic development from Carwyn who said Wales hadn’t dragged behind the UK and the welsh economy was favourable in comparison the North East of England and Wales even had lower unemployment than London –  frankly I don’t even know where to start with that statement, it shockingly complacent but typical of the past 14 years of devolution on matter economic.

Finally Huw asked Carwyn  for one thing that people could judge him on, Carwyn went for the easy option of Investment, especially in the economy.

Huw Edwards is hardly the most forensic interviewer but he’s certainly a step up from the political journalists in Wales and did make the First Minister quite uncomfortable over the Health and Education especially by asking direct question. Perhaps some people could learn lessons

The full interview will be on this link pretty soon
