Here’s two interesting stories in the past fortnight from the US and France on very wealthy individuals calling on their respective governments to tax them more, not something you hear very often - so what's up?.
First Warren Buffet the US Investment Billionaire wrote an article in the New York Times calling on the US Government to tax him and his fellow billionaires and stop granting them favours when the vast majority of his fellow citizens are struggling in the current climate.
And in France 16 wealthy individuals including L’Oréal heiress Liliane Bettencourt, signed a petition that called on the French Government to take a “special contribution” from the country’s biggest earners — one that would remain “reasonable” so as not to see billionaires fleeing France for overseas tax havens. Might it have something to do with the Euro's problems.
With UK Chancellor George Osborne ready to scrap the 50p top tax rate and the deal with Swiss Banks to tax British accounts which would easily make up any shortfall in revenue, Britain is still a good bet for the super rich, but so are the US and France despite the consciousness of a few very wealthy people.
