During "Carmageddon I", your Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) strategically pre-deployed additional resources in order to reduce response times in areas affected by the freeway closure and associated traffic issues. We will be doing this again for "Carmageddon II", and the highly successful LAFD Motorcycle Response Teams will be among the additional resources added. Our personnel along with, LAPD, EMD, CERT, DOT, CHP, Caltrans, and other Public Safety Agencies are working together in a Unified Command to manage public safety needs during the closure. The LAFD has assigned a Field Incident Management Team to control this event, whom early on, initiated a planning process with various agencies.
Last years success in turning 'Carmageddon' into 'Carmaheaven' was truly because Angelenos raised to the occasion and stayed home, discovered their neighborhoods, rode bikes and public transit. Simply put, the same will happen this year if we plan ahead, avoid the area, and stay local, rather than face frustration from road congestion. Also, many local business owners are sweetening the deal by offering incentives, freebies and discounts to assist keep people off the roads during this event. There is even an interactive map to help you find incredible offers right outside your doorstep. Our friends at CHP offer a reminder that there is a zero tolerance rule regarding illegally accessing closed portions of the 405 freeway during construction.
As we work together through this event, Los Angeles Firefighters ask you to join us in driving safe and please remember when seeing lights and sirens behind you, pull-to-the-right.
