Daily Briefing, 8/2/2012

Good morning everyone!  Here is today's Daily Briefing.

The Lehigh County Commissioners' appointments committee declined to make a recommendation to the full board yesterday on a replacement for Don Cunningham, setting the stage for a Commissioners-wide vote next Wednesday.  John Reynard has been nominated by local Democrats to replace Patrick Slattery on the ballot as the candidate in the 134th Legislative District.

In state-wide news, a Morning Call story notes that Mitt Romney's campaign is not yet advertising on TV in Pennsylvania, though it is in other states, making some question if Romney will compete in Pennsylvania this year.

In national news, more than half of all counties in the United States are officially disaster areas as a result of the worst drought that the country has seen in decades.  According to a Reuters report, President Obama secretly ordered aid to Syrian rebels in the ongoing struggles in that country.  The House of Representatives approved an extension of all Bush-era tax cuts.  The Federal Reserve yesterday acknowledged that the economy had slowed, but took no new action.

We have two Chamber events today: a breakfast seminar with Mayor Pawlowski in Allentown and a Grand Opening at Aamco in Whitehall.

And that's it for now!  Have a great day, and we'll see you later.
