It’s no coincidence that the most intense interest and coverage has come from Denmark where Michael Laudrup hails and is hero worshipped, but it would be mistake to think the interest is only dewy eyed admiration from the Danish public, Danish business has spotted and opportunity and are cashing in on their famous son in Wales’s second city.
A few of examples of this are Danish football shows are covering Swansea’s games instead of the likes of Manchester Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal along side the Danish leagues; Danish newspapers have sent reporters to sample life in Swansea and the Gower coast and Danish airlines are laying on extra flights to the UK for fans and tourists who want to see matches and visit the City.
BBC Wales and the Western Mail have rightly been quick to report these developments, but why has Wales been so slow to reciprocate and grab a slice of the action. Given the dire state of the Welsh economy the Welsh Government and Welsh business should be taking any opportunities to promote Wales and create jobs and grow business with both hands. Denmark has a population of just over 5.5 and there are a further 20 million Scandinavians to tell of the wonders of Wales, maybe we should start with a tourist campaign and a Trade Mission first and build from there.
If the Labour Welsh Government wasn’t allergic to nationalism I would suggest they do the same thing for Spain given the large number of Spaniards in Swansea’s team as well, but that might be pushing things, let’s stick to Denmark and Scandinavia and get our Minister’s doing something positive for Wales after the long recess.
