Growing Your Business in 2012 - Get Up

Another day, another blog entry from Carol Ritter of Carol Talks

I was so fortunate to grow up with really cool parents.  I did not think so at the time but soon learned they were unique in the fact that the lessons I learned were completely transferable into my personal and business life.  Do you have a laundry list of failures?  Have you made excuses or launched the BIG COVER UP when things go wrong?  And do you have a even bigger laundry list of excuses when you just can’t get it right?

Where did you learn how to deal with failure?  Most of my audiences will say they learned it from their parents.  If I ask you how you feel when you fail, you might say: lousy, sad, depressed, or even paralyzed.  Or just maybe you might say energized, powerful, willing to try again, learned what went wrong and fixed it.  Two different mind sets both emotional but one can be your ticket to stardom - ENERGIZED!  I don’t know how anyone can have a business without failing at sometime.  When we first named our company we knew what it meant but the rest of the world didn’t.  So every time our brand was mentioned or identified 50 questions came with it.  Failure, lesson learned.  Hired the wrong person, wonderful in an interview, unable to perform.  Failure, the lesson learned was to change the way we interviewed.  Tried to sell something we thought was great and no one bought it. Failure, lesson learned and on and on.

My dad used these two simple words when we put on the sob story as kids, “Get Up” try it again, it’s not the end of the world, you will do better the next time, let me help you, etc.  Do you see what happened with those two words? “Get Up” he taught me that failure is not the end of the world and, even more important, he never tried to blame someone else.  That lesson is simple, concise and forever embedded in my mind.

The next time you fail at something and you will, “Get UP” no cover - ups, no excuses, no self beat downs.  You may even find a fascinating lesson in that failure and make changes in your business that might last forever.
